History

Direct selling has been a popular method of retailing since the days of travelling salesmen, when merchants would travel from place to place with an ever-changing array of goods for sale. The party plan model was pioneered in the 1940s by companies like Tupperware and the network marketing model evolved later. These models retain their foundation as the direct sales channel.

Almost half a century ago with the industry still in its infancy five organisations formed the National Association of Direct Selling Organisations which operated within the Victorian Chamber of Manufacturers. Avon and Tupperware remain as foundation members. In 1973 a separate and autonomous secretariat was established and operated at various locations in Victoria before relocating to Sydney in 2003.

The DSAA is now an incorporated association with more than seventy members who engage at least half a million Australians in the distribution of their products. It is foremost an association directed and controlled by its members. Some of the outstanding contributions that have been made to the industry at association and corporate levels are recognised through induction to the DSAA’s Hall of Fame and Life Members.
