How many direct selling companies are there?
All that can be provided is an estimate. There is no public register of all direct selling organisations operating in Australia. If the industry is reflective of general Australian business experience it too would have an attrition rate for new starts. DSAA represents most of the large direct selling organisations in Australia. It estimates its Members would account for over ninety percent of industry sales.
Who can join the DSAA?
DSAA has different membership categories. Full membership is open to organisations who have been engaged in direct selling in Australia for twelve months, although this requirement can be waived for individual circumstances. The principal condition for membership is that Members strictly comply with DSAA’s Code of Practice. It prescribes the behavioural standards expected between Members, their salespeople, and consumers. Provisional Membership is a twelve month transition to full membership where DSAA has time to be confident that an organisation’s policies and operations comply with legal requirements and DSAA standards. DSAA also offers Supplier Membership to organisations supplying services to the direct selling industry.
Does DSAA provide any benefits for Distributors?
As a distributor for a member you benefit from its compliance with DSAA’s Code of Practice. You should share your affiliation with a member with customers as DSAA membership symbolises trading ethics. You can expect your organisation to:
- Accurately inform you on its pay structure, products and sales methods.
- Refrain from any unlawful or unethical recruiting practice, and excessive entry or training fees.
- Make any actual or potential sales and earnings claims on documented facts.
- Not encourage the purchase of unreasonable amounts of inventory.
- Repurchase 90% of the marketable inventory and sales aids you have purchased within the twelve months prior to ending a distributorship.
You may also benefit from other services provided by DSAA, for example, lobbying on distribution issues e.g. taxation, and guidance on small business issues.
